What Are Acrylic Signs?

Acrylic signs are made from a colorless, transparent, durable cast polymer and is a perfect substitute for traditional glass. Because of their depth, clarity, and resilience, they are often used as lobby, directional, and architectural signage.

Acrylic signs are made with UV ink printed directly onto the material. However, they can also be used as rigid substrates for attaching vinyl lettering or print films like opaque and clear window decals.

Acrylic signs are an excellent choice if you want to add a simple yet sophisticated look to any office, business, or professional setting. They are 100% customizable and one of the best ways to showcase your logo or brand.

Thickness of Our Acrylic Signs

The default thickness for our acrylic signs is 1/8". This is sufficient for almost all uses of acrylic signs.

We also offer 1/4" thick acrylic if you need signs that require added durability and resilience for a minimal added cost. This thicker option provides great light refraction which means it has better sheen and depth.

Both thickness options have some bendability to them. When choosing between thicknesses, we recommend that you select centered top and bottom drilled holes in addition to the four corners for added support. This goes for all signs bigger than 60".

Drilled Holes & Standoffs

Drilled Holes

The most common way to display your custom acrylic sign is to mount it on a rigid surface like a concrete wall. For easy installation, we offer optional drilled holes for your sign.

We can drill holes into your acrylic sign in the following configurations:

  • Each of the four corners
  • Top and bottom center
  • Top corners only
  • Corners and top and bottom center
  • Custom hole placement

The perfect pairing with drilled holes is our gorgeous brushed anodized aluminum standoffs. They are measured 0.5" in diameter and 0.75" in length. You can purchase them as an additional item, and we will provide installation notes with your order.

Taking Care of Your Acrylic Sign

Acrylic can easily chip or shatter when mishandled. To prevent damaging your acrylic sign, we recommend that you install it properly and do regular maintenance. You may clean your acrylic sign using a damp non-abrasive cloth to wipe the surface. Keep it away from any sharp objects that may scratch the printed surface or acrylic. When storing your acrylic sign, cover it with soft fabric or packaging wrap to protect it from scratches. Do not place any objects on or against your acrylic sign during storage. Finally, install your sign in locations that aren't exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods.

Removing the Protective Film

Removing the Protective Film

The surface of acrylic signs may be easily scratched. To protect your acrylic signs during shipment, we add a protective blue film to the acrylic surface. This film is removable and isn't a permanent part of your acrylic sign.

The process to remove the blue film takes only a minute or two. Begin at one of the corners of the sign and start pulling the film from the surface of the acrylic. Once the protective film is removed your sign is ready for installation.

Acrylic vs. Glass

While acrylic has similar properties to glass, they are completely different materials. Acrylic maintains the clarity of glass but still can shatter or scratch due to intentional or unintentional efforts to do so. Acrylic is often called a "glass substitute" and this is due to its beautiful printed appearance and not fundamentally different durability compared to traditional glass. When handled carefully, your acrylic signs will provide a stunning yet professional look on a clear, rigid material.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best material to use for a sign that will not fade in the sun?
Outdoor signs are often exposed to sunlight, and you’ll need materials that have high UV resistance. Aluminum signs are usually the first choice for outdoor signs since they do not fade even when exposed to direct sunlight, and they resist rust and corrosion. Acrylic plexiglass can also resist UV rays and fading, while also offering opaque and transparent designs.

Q:
Are your signs waterproof/weatherproof? Can they be hung up or put out side with out getting distroyed? How durable are they???
Asked a year ago by Lisa B.
A:

Our acrylic signs have an estimated lifespan of 5+ years with proper placement and care. These are suitable for indoor and outdoor use, eco-friendly, weather, fade, and abrasion-resistant UV ink. Acrylic can easily chip or shatter when mishandled. To prevent damaging your acrylic sign, we recommend that you install it properly and do regular maintenance.

Q:
What is acrylic? Is it glass? Plexiglass? Are acrylic signs the same thing as plexiglass signs?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

Acrylic is not glass, but a type of hard plastic also known as polyacrylate. While it is a lightweight and durable material, it is not shatterproof. Acrylic signs are commonly used indoors but they can be used outside as well. Some of the popular acrylic sign brands like Plexiglas, Perspex, and Lucite are all in fact acrylic but carry their own brand name. Thus, acrylic (signs) is the same thing as plexiglass (signs). Certain types of acrylic are different, including Lexan. Lexan (a polycarbonate) is used as bulletproof glass, among other applications, but is not typically an ideal material for signage due to its proneness to yellowing in the sun, susceptibility to scratching, and prohibitive cost.

Q:
How thick is your acrylic? Do you offer different thickness options?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

Our acrylic signs are .125” or approximately 3 mm thick. The .125” acrylic is the default thickness offered on our website. You can also select 6 mm (1/4” or .25”) during the design process.

Q:
How do I know where my acrylic sign will be clear?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

The clear or transparent area of your design file is indicated by the gray and white checkered pattern which you’ll see when you use our online designer too on our site. If you want any part of your acrylic sign to be clear, please make sure that this background is visible on your proof. To get that checkered area, simply go to the color panel and choose “Clear” while you have your whole sign (or the object you want clear) selected. Please note that if you upload a JPG file with a white background to the site, we will print the white part of the image. If you want the background to be clear instead, please upload a PNG file with transparency. Should you need any help with your sign, please feel free to contact us so we can assist you with your design.

Q:
Why does shipping cost so much if you offer free shipping?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

Shipping for orders over $99 is free. However, this excludes rigid signs over 36" or any order that requires freight shipping. Large rigid signs require special packaging and oftentimes trigger freight shipping which is significantly more expensive. Unfortunately, the 36" threshold is a shipping industry rule of thumb, and it is beyond our control in our ability to ship these large signs in any other way.

Q:
Can I drill holes into the sign on my own?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

Yes. You can drill own holes into your sign if you wish and you may use any standard drill with the proper bit. Please note though that if you drill holes into the sign by yourself, we’ll be unable to replace, repair, or refund the cost of sign lest any damages occur.

Q:
Can I get more than four drilled holes? How customizing holes in specific areas of the sign?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

Yes, you can. Simply select the “Custom” option within the “Drilled Holes” dropdown in the design tool. Please specify your requirements in the customer comments section of the checkout page when ordering signs with custom holes. Please also note that custom-drilled holes will incur an additional charge to your order.

Q:
What sizes do you offer? Are there minimum or maximum dimensions my sign has to adhere to?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

Acrylic signs truly come in every shape and size. We offer any custom size you may need so long as the dimensions aren’t smaller than 4” or bigger than 96”. Standard acrylic sign sizes we offer include 12" x 12", 24" x 12", 36" x 18", 2' x 4', 4' x 4', 4' x 8'.

Q:
What is the lifespan of your custom acrylic signs?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

The lifespan of your acrylic sign will largely depend on how you use it and how well you care for it. With proper care and placement, your acrylic sign should last a minimum of five years.

Q:
Does printing in one or two colors reduce the cost?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

We always print in full color which means we don’t charge based on the number of colors used in your design. This means you can print a full color design for the same price as it would cost if you printed something in say, black and white. The total cost of your order will depend on the size of the sign you ordered, the quantity, and any taxes and shipping fees. You may, however, avail of our free design services if you need help in creating your sign.
