How to Install Your Custom Car Magnet

Step 1, showing a car magnet flat on the floor

Place your magnet on a flat magnetic surface for 24 hours to restore magnetic memory.

Before installing your magnet, be sure to put it on a flat magnetic surface such as a refrigerator for 24 hours. We ship all our magnets rolled up to prevent damage during shipment. Placing them on a magnetic surface will help flatten the magnet for installation while resetting the magnetic memory. Failing to place your magnet on such a surface will result in poor adherence to the vehicle surface during installation and subsequent use.

Step 2 showing someone wiping the side door of a car with a rag

Clean the vehicle surface and magnet before installing it.

We recommend cleaning the exterior of your vehicle and wiping down the back of your magnet with a damp cloth (a mild detergent and water solution will also work) prior to installing on the vehicle's surface. By cleaning both the vehicle and magnet and allowing them to air dry you'll prevent any dirt or tiny rocks from scratching the vehicle's paint and create a solid connection between the magnet and vehicle surface.

Step 3 showing the magnet being applied to the car

Place the magnet on a flat magnetic vehicle surface (no curves, bumps, and no molding).

Please note that the installation surface must be completely flat without any bumps, curves, or molding. The surface must also be a magnet-compatible metal, otherwise the magnet will not work. Make sure the magnet completely adheres to the surface without air pockets.

Step 4 showing someone cleaning the magnet while on a flat surface

Avoid damage to your magnet or vehicle by removing and cleaning both surfaces frequently.

Remove your magnet often and regularly to quickly clean the application surface as well as the back of the magnet. Doing so will increase its longevity and hold.

Step 5 showing someone removing the magnet from the side of the vehicle

Remove magnets during car washes or when not in use.

Remove your magnet before entering a mechanical car wash or using a power washer as both can permanently damage your custom car magnet. We also recommend storing the magnet if you won’t be using it for an extended period. Store it flat and out of direct sunlight.

Care

Care

After removing your vehicle's magnet we recommend cleaning it before storing it flat in a container, in a cool, dry place or with a piece of non-abrasive fabric on each side. Storing it in any of these ways will prevent any damage to you magnet including the printed side, keeping it in excellent condition for future use.

Q:
What temperature range do your magnets work in?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

It is also worth noting that magnets are intended for use on surfaces that are in temperatures between -15°F and 160°F. Temperatures that are too cold can cause the magnet to become brittle and not adhere properly. Surface temperatures that exceed 160°F can result in the magnet baking onto the surface of the vehicle which can result in paint damage.

Q:
Do car magnets stick to all types of vehicles?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

We recommend checking the surface of your car to determine if it allows magnetic adhesion. In some cases where the magnet doesn’t stick, the surface may not be magnetic and could be a plastic or carbon fiber material (bumpers are typically a non-magnetic material).

Q:
Are the magnets waterproof and weather-proof? What about car washes?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

While our custom car magnets are designed to be used in any climate, they should still be removed during extreme weather. Torrential downpours, high winds, etc. can pull the magnet off the car and even potentially ruin the magnetic properties of the sign.

As noted above, cut to shape magnets can also be less durable when adhered to your vehicle. The other exception is the use of power washers and car washes. For the same reason as heavy rain and the powerful brushes of a car wash, magnets should be removed before washing your vehicle.

Q:
Is there a limit on how many times I can remove and put them on my vehicle?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

No. The magnets are designed to be able to be used for vehicles that often play the role of a business vehicle during the day and personal vehicle during the evening.

That said, the magnets and the surface where applied should be washed and dried before applying and on a regular basis to ensure your magnet lasts as long as possible and that your vehicle’s paint is not damaged from small grains of dust or dirt.

Q:
What if I want a more permanent solution?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

For a semi-permanent solution check out our car decals which use an adhesive instead of a magnetic backing. These can still be easily removed if necessary but only on a one-time basis unlike magnets that can be attached and repositioned as needed.

Q:
Can I reapply the car magnet to another location?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

Yes, you can. Our car magnets are repositionable and removable so you can use them on different vehicles or various applications.

Q:
Can your magnets be used for surfaces other than vehicles?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

Yes, any metallic surface within your home or business will work perfectly with our magnets. Refrigerators, tool storage units in garage settings, kitchen areas in restaurants, machinery, and doors in manufacturing settings and much more will work just fine with our magnets. Surfaces that do not work with our magnets include fiberglass, acrylic, and other similar hard plastic surfaces.

Q:
Is there any place I should avoid putting my magnet on my vehicle?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

Other than non-metallic surfaces, rusted or already damaged areas (i.e., chipped or peeling paint) should be avoided. Placing a magnet in such spots can reduce the magnetic ability, further erode the paint surface or both.

Further, magnets should only be placed on flat, smooth surfaces and not on top of major creases, trim or other non-flat surfaces including edges, curves, and rounded surfaces. Doing so will cause wind to get under the magnet and potentially pull the magnet off the car while your vehicle is in motion.

Q:
Can I place your car magnets on my bumper?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

Most modern vehicle bumpers are not made of metal, so placing a magnet there would not work. We would instead recommend our opaque car decals in that instance. If, however, you do have a metal bumper and it is flat enough to place a magnet, our car magnets should work great.

Q:
Can I buy blank magnets?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

Yes, you can order them through the normal ordering process. Simply order the magnet with no design. It would be helpful for our quality assurance team to leave a comment at checkout letting us know your sign is intentionally blank.
