What Are Opaque Window Clings?

Window clings (sometimes known as static clings or static window clings) are similar to decals as they are printed onto a thin white vinyl material that can be easily applied to a smooth surface. Unlike decals, however, window clings stick to glass and other smooth surfaces without any adhesive. No sticky adhesive means no mess plus the benefit of being able to reuse and reposition your cling as you please. Opaque window clings are the perfect choice for temporary signage.

Opaque window clings are printed in full color with high resolution digital UV Ink. Having a brilliant print means you can proudly display a fantastic design in minutes with an opaque window cling. Although these window clings are not intended for vehicle use or other exterior applications, they provide excellent window signage for any occasion.

Removable and Repositionable

With clings, you’re in full control whenever you want to move or take down your design. Window clings can be placed on a window, removed when needed, then reused again. In comparison to decals, window clings have the added benefit of not leaving any adhesive residue when taken down.

Repositioning your cling is simple. Just peel it away from the surface and put it back wherever you want. A little water with a couple drops of dish soap works wonders to get your cling adjusted on the window just right. Use a squeegee to remove air pockets and excess water then let it dry. See the installation instructions for more details.

When you are done displaying your cling, you can store it for later use by putting it back on the white backing that came with your cling. You can also use wax paper if you no longer have the backing. Store your cling flat, in a cool, dry place.

Advanced Printing

Opaque window clings are printed in full color with UV ink using a digital printing process. This means that no matter how simple or detailed your design, you can expect a clear image and text on your cling.

Whether your design is one color or multicolor, your cost is the same. If you don’t have a design ready but have an idea of what you’d like we can help. Take advantage of our free design services and we’ll help you get the perfect window cling display.

When your design uses a color or image background, opaque window clings are perfect. Keep in mind that you can also get a clear window cling if you are looking for something more transparent.

How to Install Opaque Window Clings

Applying your window cling can be done in a few simple steps. All you need is the window cling, a clean surface, a soap and water mixture in a spray bottle, and a squeegee (available for purchase with a window cling).

1.
Step 1 for Installing Opaque Window Clings

Thoroughly clean the surface of the glass or non-porous surface you’re applying the window cling to. Use water or any other household window cleaner.

2.
Step 2 for Installing Opaque Window Clings

Once the surface is clean, gently peel the white backing away from the cling.

3.
Step 3 for Installing Opaque Window Clings

Use a light soap and water mixture to spray the window and the non-printed side of your cling (the front for inside glass window clings or the rear for outside glass, or standard surface, window clings). While a light wet application is recommended, your cling can be applied without using the soapy water solution.

Use a squeegee* to remove excess water and bubbles.

*Available for purchase with opaque window clings and other decal products.

6.
Step 6 for Installing Opaque Window Clings

Once dry, your window cling will adhere to the window while still being removable and repositionable!

Care

Custom opaque window clings can be easily cleaned using a damp cloth or paper towel. Gently wipe dirt or residue from the surface of the cling and surrounding window. When needing to store the window cling, simply remove it from the window, wipe it down to remove any surface dirt, then re-apply the protective backing on the ‘adhesive’ side. If you don’t have the protective backing, wax paper can be used as a protective backing.

Q:
What is the difference between opaque window clings and opaque window decals?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

Opaque window clings are different from opaque window decals in the way that they stick to smooth surfaces. A window cling sometimes known as a static cling adheres to smooth surfaces similar to a suction cup. A decal, on the other hand, has a sticky adhesive which creates a bond between the vinyl and the attaching surface. Clings are perfect for temporary solutions such as advertisements and promotions or seasonal designs. Decals are generally designed for semi-permanent or long-term window signage solutions.

The final appearance of opaque window clings and opaque window decals are very similar. Both window display options use beautiful, full-color printing technology and show excellent design quality.

Q:
Are window clings the same thing as static clings, static cling decals, or static cling stickers?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

In short, yes. Your window cling will stick to any smooth surface, particularly glass or plexiglass (acrylic) without adhesive. Window graphics that adhere to surfaces without adhesive are commonly called static window clings due to the myth that “static electricity” is what allows them to stick to surfaces. We dispel that myth in our blog post: "How Do Static Clings Work?". Any of the above terms or variations using decals, clings, and stickers are often used interchangeably. So long as you understand that these clings do not have an actual adhesive and are white, then no matter which term you use you’ll get what you need.

Q:
How do window clings stick?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

Unlike our vinyl window decals that use an adhesive backing, window clings do not use an adhesive backing to stick to your windows. Likewise, static clings do not stick due to any kind of static electricity. Rather, clings stick due to the vinyl material acting much like a suction cup when placed and pressed onto a smooth, non-porous surface such as glass, metal or plastic. We’ve written a more in-depth article about how static clings work if you need more information.

Q:
Should I choose a cling or a decal?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

Static window clings are generally better for temporary usages such as sales, events, holiday decorations, seasonal promotions and the like. For this reason they are a fantastic option for retail stores who regularly have sales and other marketing material in an attempt to drive foot traffic into the store. They also are more affordable but less permanent than a window decal. If you want or need something that can be removed and repositioned regularly then a window cling is the way to go. If you need a semi-permanent and long lasting solution, then we would recommend a window decal. So while terms like “window cling stickers” and “static cling window decals” may be used, remember that there is a clear distinction between clings and decals in terms of basic functionality.

Q:
What type of adhesive is used in window clings?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

Window clings do not make use of any adhesives. The vinyl film itself acts as suction cups that adhere to glass surfaces, and it's also why you can remove and reposition them freely.

Q:
What is the difference between standard and inside glass print surface for window clings?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

The standard print surface is designed for the back of the cling to stick on the surface. Inside glass is meant to be displayed behind the window, with the printed surface touching the glass itself.

Q:
How long will my opaque window clings last?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

With proper care and maintenance, window clings can last for more than a year.

Q:
How much does it cost to print an opaque window clings?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

The cost of window clings depends on the size, shape, printed surface, and quantity. In general, the more clings you print, the more you can save.

Q:
What window cling sizes do you offer?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:

You have the freedom to customize your opaque window cling to almost any size you want! There aren’t any industry specific standard sizes for window clings. While there are certain sizes that are more common (6”x9”, 9”x12”, 12”x18”, 12”x24”, 16”x20”, 18”x24”, and 24”x36”) due to the clings being used for store hours, sales, etc. Notwithstanding, there is a minimum and maximum dimension allowable for your window cling.

Custom clings can’t be smaller than 3” and no bigger than 400”. Clings smaller than 3”x3” do not adhere as well and may result in printing that is not as clear due to our large format printers. It is also recommended that you avoid using very tiny fonts or lettering to ensure your cling is printed clearly.

Q:
Will my opaque cling be visible from a distance?
Asked 2 years ago by Signs
A:
We recommend using contrasting colors to ensure the greatest visibility for your cling. We also typically print white behind the printed portion of your cling to ensure the greatest brilliance and clarity possible. This white print will not be seen and is done free of charge. Beyond a contrasting color and the white ink, when designing your cling take into consideration what surface and where it will be placed, from what distance you need people to see it, and what text you actually need on the sign. Less is more for most signs!
