What are Car Decals?
Car decals (also called car stickers or car graphics) are images, graphics, or lettering printed onto or cut out of self-adhesive vinyl and then placed on any vehicle. Car decals include car and truck lettering, clear vinyl decals, opaque vinyl decals, perforated decals, and high-adhesive decals. They are mainly used for advertising business names, logos, products, and contact information. They may also be used to show off your favorite logo, team, band, etc.
Decals vs. Stickers: We’re often asked about the difference between decals and stickers. They may sound and look similar, but they have very distinct materials and applications. Typically printed on vinyl, decals are meant to be displayed on the windows or body of a vehicle. On the other hand, stickers can be printed on paper or on outdoor film. Unlike decals, stickers can be placed on a broad range of items, such as notebooks, water bottles, and laptops, to name a few.
Common Uses: For outdoor use on windows, doors, fronts, or the back of any vehicle. This includes cars (automobiles), trucks, commercial vans, tractors, race cars, buses, motorcycles, dirt bikes, ATVs, UTVs, off-road vehicles, RVs, and others.
Installation: All our vehicle decals are easy to install. You can find step-by-step installation instructions for each product on its respective product page. Select “Learn More” on one of the products listed above to see the product-specific installation instructions.
Care: Regularly clean your vehicle decal with a damp, non-abrasive cloth. This will remove dirt and grime from the decal and help maintain its quality and life span. Avoid using power washers or high-power car washes. All decals are safe to use on areas of a window with windshield wipers.

Questions and Answers
Yes, car decals can be customized to match your company's branding. A reliable, professional sign printing provider can create custom car decals with your company's logo, colors, and other branding elements to maintain consistency across your marketing efforts.
Yes. Our decals work on any make or model of car or truck. More detail is provided on the respective product pages. But the most crucial part is selecting the correct type of decal and accurately measuring it for proper placement on your vehicle. If you are looking for a decal to place on your boat, we recommend checking out our boat lettering and decals.
Yes, all five decal types are made from vinyl material but have significant differences that should be noted. Our car and truck lettering decal is made by cutting your design directly out of solid-colored vinyl and does not include any printed graphics. Opaque and clear car decals differ in visibility/transparency, as the former is printed on opaque material and is better suited for doors or sides of vans or delivery trucks. Due to their see-through material, clear decals can be used on car windows. The ideal usage of clear decals is when an opaque background is not wanted. Alternatively, perforated decals, with their 50:50 ratio of solid material and perforated holes, offer the best choice for car windows, especially on rear windows for cars or trucks. The perforated material provides a solution for full-sized decals that don’t impede the driver’s visibility. We recommend using perforated car decals only when an entire window is covered to ensure the privacy of the driver, passengers, and others on the road. As for high-adhesive decals, these are made with opaque vinyl material and are best for placing on the body or doors of your vehicle.
All of the decals come with a removable lining that when peeled away leaves an adhesive backing.
The term “car sticker” is often used when describing a car decal but is not normally a common signage industry term. “Car decals” or “decals” are the terms most often used when looking for a car sign with an adhesive or sticky backing.
While there are common sizes of car decals (12”x12”, 18”x12”) there aren’t really any industry standard car decal sizes. This is because each car or truck model/type differs from the next. Thus, we highly recommend measuring the spot on your vehicle where the decal will be placed. Correct measurements will ensure a decal doesn’t come off the vehicle prematurely due to air getting underneath the decal.
The custom aspect of the decal is in regard to design, size, and type. We print everything in full color so you have the flexibility of printing virtually any design you may want. Likewise, you can customize one of our existing templates or use our free professional design services to have us custom create one for you. The decal size is also completely custom. Rather than offering only standard sizes for our decals we have a few common options with the ability to literally select any size you might need.
Lastly, no matter if you need clear, opaque, perforated or vinyl lettering, we offer all types of car decals. Thus, regardless of your situation and needs you should be able to find or design a custom decal that works perfectly for you.
Decals are a great choice for a long-lasting vehicle signage solution. This can be to advertise a personal business or even for fleet or company cars. Though removing your decal is fairly easy, these decals are considered semi-permanent and are not designed to be removed and reapplied. For more temporary car signs, one should select our car magnets. These are a perfect sign option that can be removed and reapplied on a regular basis.
No, car decals are not the same as a cling. A cling is a type of sign that adheres to a surface using static electricity rather than an adhesive backing. So while some may call them car clings or window clings for cars this is a misnomer. Generally, static clings are better off inside. For vehicles you should choose from one of the decal options including car/truck lettering, clear, opaque, perforated, or high adhesive.
Generally speaking, design for any of the decal types can be done in similar fashion as long as best practices are followed. Best practices for designing car decals include not putting too much text on the sign, keeping the design simple, having a clear call to action, and using contrasting colors. Contrasting colors are particularly important for clear car decals since the decal itself won’t contrast with any text you may put on your sign.
Yes, there is a significant difference in the decals beyond the design considerations noted above. Car and truck lettering does not have a background, and each letter is individually cut out, making it an excellent choice for your vehicle’s windows. As the name implies, opaque car decals should be used only on the sides of vehicles, as they will completely impair the driver’s visibility if placed on windows. Clear decals can be placed on the vehicle itself or on windows. However, the printed area will not be see-through even with clear car decals. Perforated decals offer the best solution for promoting your business or message while still being able to see through the sign. Perforated decals should always be used for rear windows and any large signs that will be used on the vehicle’s windows. High-adhesive decals have a powerful adhesive and should be used only for permanent applications, particularly on the doors or body of your vehicle.
